Kurata Grants are presented on March 1 each year to young scientists engaged in basic and applied research in a wide range of fields that include electronics, mechanical engineering, chemistry, biology, mathematics, information science, physics and life science.
Kurata Grants assist with travel expenses to overseas international conferences for the Kurata Grants Recipients who present research activities at the conferences, less than 3 years after receiving the Grants.

To help promote basic science and technology in Japan, commendations and monetary prizes are given to primary and junior-high schools that have been awarded a Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Prize for outstanding efforts in the area of fostering originality. These schools are nominated by prefectural governors in recognition of the efforts schools and teachers have made to promote originality in their students.

Once a year the foundation issues the Kurata Grant Research Report to publicize research papers published by Kurata Grant recipients.
